A great place for
canoeing and kayaking
Launch your own, or rent
one…
Whether you rent a boat or own one, the
The Nissequogue
is a tidal river, and not without inherent dangers. An eight foot rise and fall of the tide can
produce swift currents, and strong winds sometimes blow in from Long Island
Sound. Nissequogue
is an Indian word that means “muddy banks” or “clay banks”, and great care must
be taken to avoid getting stuck in the mud at or near low tide. The best time to be on the river is from 4
hours before high tide until 4 hours after.
All canoe or kayak trips, therefore, should be planned with this in
mind. If you are not familiar with this
river, please seek some advice before launching.
To take maximum advantage of the
current and enjoy the longest trip, launch your craft 2 1/2 hours before high
tide. This will give you 2 hours to
paddle up, with the current, to the headwaters at Jericho Turnpike. Once there
you will have a half hour or so for a little lunch break, and then you and the current will head back
downriver with the outgoing tide, back to the Nissequogue
River State Park. High tide is different every day. Make sure you plan ahead.
